War and Penance
Magazine Article Cover and Spread
For this project we had to select a magazine article and create an editorial
spread and cover illustration for the magazine using photo manipulation and collaging.

I mimicked this piecing of images together for my cover by combining two different images: one of a soldier and another of hands in prayer, so when you look at the soldier, you can see the hands of prayer and that they are together.
I decided to illustrate this article I found in CommonWeal magazine titeled “War and Penance.” The article discusses a soldier finding religion through and after war. I wanted to emphasize seeing religion and hope through the brutality and horrors of war. I was inspired by stained-glass windows, which is seen in most Catholic Churches. I created my own stained-glass window made up of torn images of war. On the opposite page, I wanted to use images related to Christianity to create a sort of shelter to show protection and security.
